I was really excited about that Sigil but then you took it out last second and made me a very sad eXXa.
Your general is pretty baller though.
All in all the deck seems kinda boring. It’s a good poison deck but does no silly/funny/entertaining things like your decks normally do. It just plain poisons people.
I guess it’s the very nature of infect after all.
I feel like I say this to ya a lot, muscle mask; so much so that I am beginning to wonder if your body mass has enveloped your ears, thus making you unable to hear me explain what you often feel you are pointing out.
The Sigil was bad – too literal, slow, and ineffective.
The deck: yes, as I said, I streamlined it to be more competitive, aggressive, and altogether broooooootal. It’s a bunch of weak cards working together to an efficient end – not so much room for frills, thrills, and fancy pills. When other people have Titans, you will quickly discover that your 1/1 for 2 mana don’t match up quite as well. And, as I point out in most of my videos, I usually leave some wiggle room for edits based on preference. I am basing my decisions on my play experiences, but I am not infallible.
Cards you could cut: Darksteel Axe, Gitaxian Probe, Peek, Brainspoil, Phyrexian Arena, Grim Affliction
Throughput was my point with the above choices, but they are rather weak in affect. Then again, I am of the opinion that cost economy can sometimes trump the power of more expensive cards.
Glad to see you got a game in. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing your attempts that were “ruined” by whiners, lecturers, quitters and whatnot. It’s nice to see the deck work, but part of the reason I watch these vids is because I’m curious how people play Commander.
Why Skeleton Ship as commander? Is it actually good in this deck, or did you just want something that fit the theme? I’d think that a The Mimeoplasm deck would be pretty nice, being able to get a 7/7 Blighted Agent and all, and playing some of the non-sucky green infecters (like Phyrexian Swarmlord).
I was wondering why some cards were not included:
- Suq’ata Assassin (he suqs, but is still Blighted Agent #2)
- Sword of Fire and Ice and Loxodon Warhammer (power boosting has almost quadruple worth here)
- Whispersilk Cloak (don’t want your dudes to get into combat)
- Hex (it’s a Wrath that does not kill your own dudes, and usually if you can’t cast it, you don’t need to)
- Repeal (Into the Roil/Repulse alternative)
Equipment in general seems good with infect guys, since they tend to be very lackluster except for the word “infect”. Also keeps you from having to overextend into Wrath, since one infect guy holding a pointy stick is worth two without.
Is it worth to keep your curve low mostly for the sake of Future Sight? I see the need to get in some early poison counters to enable the proliferate strategy, but you’re not leveraging the “go big or go home” angle that Commander offers.
If you’re wondering how to fill downtime, why not do some art critique? You’re not likely to run out of ammunition any time soon.
Xyx,
This deck is def streamlined, barring the aforementioned wiggle room. I believe I discuss why I chose to go with 2 colors (hence the Ship), rather than a 3 color build (per your Mimeoplasm – which should be used for something far better than poison). I also mention equipment and why I went the down the road I chose. And, to be honest, while some of your suggestions were considerations I opted against (the Assassin, SoFI, and Cloak), others seem off to me (Hex and Repeal – both slow and not really suiting). The curve is low because the early stages of the game usually involve people building up to the “big game,” allowing me to capitalize on the blank boards and get some early counters in. From there you can usually ride out the prolif. What may at first glance seem like a weak build is really just dialed in on this idea of speed and consistency against conventional notions of power.
Lastly, the point of this vid was to explore poison, and talk a little about the controversy. This isn’t one of my fav decks, but as far as infect decks go, it performs rather well. My intent was to showcase that with the backdrop of the controversy – do something a little diff from my usual angle. As I type this I am in Indiana, having visited my gamer buddies (like Kool and AJ), and managing to play some IRL EDH. The go big consensus of which you speak is something that came while I was here, and, I must say, it is something I feel even more strongly about having word battled out with some EDH stalwarts. Mass effect cards, giant bomb guys, etc. don’t necessarily equate victory. I think spot removal is great in EDH for the same reason counter magic is: it usually only takes one good knock to put someone off their strategy. This deck epitomizes this conceit.
With regard to downtime: I have none, really. Working on some content, of course, but I am a busy city dude who makes this because I enjoy them, not for the car wash token with which I am paid.
Dear Travis, I certainly undestood why you took out the Sigil and I’m not arguing one bit about it.
I just like the card because of good old draft memories and though was sad to see it go.
So don’t always expect me to criticize you by default.
Nice and sleek deck, Travis. It looks like a pretty competitive brew, and one that is quite hard to combat for most decks in this format.
I can see that you are using a few “clone” effects, but not Clone itself. Any reason for not including more of these effects incl. the namesake?
Pretty nice cheap deck. I may have to give this a try. What/where is the add-on or whatever you use for MTGO? Its sucks not having a big screen when playing Commander so everything becomes cramped. It almost feels like you could of went with a artifact theme in addition to infect. You keep commenting that this deck is streamlined; where do you pick up these lists form then?
I believe part of not having much of an equipment focus is because you’re not really trying to kill them via combat, but rather “proliferate” each of your opponents as much as possible… which is likely a better way to attack an archetype like this and actually succeed.
I agree that it’s hard enough to do 10 poison however. The problem with commander lies in that the expectations for the format are skewed. You have a lot of decks that are simply “good” stuff decks that only want to do one thing: Play semi-powerful guys that won’t overly control the battlefield, while playing a decidedly midrange, middling game.
This is all in the supposed name of “fun.” Where I guess that means only doing so much to prevent a catastrophe, but not enough to actually win a game. People just want to bash in with big vanilla dorks.
However, this prevents people from actually having good tuned aggro archetypes or very controlling ones. They decide something is “unfun,” but with more colorful language and then quit the game in an arbitrary way. If someone actually has the nerve to attack another player, all of the other players decide to gang up on said player, rather than seeing that the person attacking said player probably is doing so because that player demonstrates the greatest long term threat.
I believe the format can change in a good way by having something at stake- whether that be a king of the hill, winner takes all packs, or some variation. Of course people will always play politics behind the scenes, but I believe this format needs a little bit of incentive for more competitive players to find a home. There’s an imbalance of expectations.
Travis, by “downtime” I meant the “dead air” in the vids during which nothing happens and you feel there is nothing to say. Should you ever be at a loss for words (imagine that), you could click on a random card and discuss the art (or lack thereof).
the dead air problem is easily solved by having another person on the show. eXXa or I could simply tag along and watch, commenting and discussing wherever possible.
buddy buddy.
friendly.
lovey dovey.
Whoa! Lots of replies incominggggggggg!
eXXa, we good, baby boy. Just saying sometimes I think you start typing and you can’t hear me answering the questions you are abouts to ask! Besides, I could donkey punch you via Fios if I had to, so I know I always have the upperhand despite your meat mountain torso you parade with such pride!
Wyrath, I think I chose to hit the optimal Clone’rs, but not the papa shapeshifter him(its?!)self. Two is a good number, and with the density of artifacts, Metamorph is a def gooder.
Neros, I come up with my own decks, always always always. Sure other people may be exploring the same routes, but I like to think I have a knack for deckbuilding. Also, arguing.
Deathcloud, well said!!! This is a serious problem one may encounter when playing a deck like this, so player beware! I got 3 vs. 1′d out today trying to play it with a few edits.
Xyx, ah! Sorry, wasn’t understanding you, but now me gets it! I mean, I think it’s reasonable that I run out of banter sometimes. This game in particular was the best of maybe 6 hours of play footage, so sometimes I start to wind down a bit and the quick cement locks up my word whips. But I do try.
Cock horse, no way, bro bro bro. No offense, but I think what makes my content my content is me. Kool, Aj, and myself have some stuff in the works that will have cameos. This article will always be a one man show unless Beverly D’angelo starts playing EDH. Oh, except for the Sheldon interview that will be posted in the weeks to come!
Okay, back in NYC, tired, and have nightmarish work ahead of me! Snoozeville it is!
