Is Sorin’s Vengeance really better than something like Consume Spirit?
I so love mondays.
7 mana for 10 suckage is better than 12 mana for 10 suckage, even if I can boost for infi later. Remem, with this many tutors, there is no reason, beyond doming a creature, that I would go for Consume or Drain over ExSanguinate. Nevahs!
Quick aside:
I had the most satisfying day yesterday playing Commander. The weekly CHAOS PRE challenge was colored mana symbols only. I played Progentius 5-C. I won both of my rounds – in my second game I was stuck on three lands until about turn 9, but somehow, by virtue of not being a threat, wrestled my way to victory on the back of a 1/1 Serra Ascendant with Mask of Riddles (I was beaten to like 22 by an opposing Serra from Turn 2)
So, in the final, it’s me vs. someone with which I do not get along spectacularly. My opener is City of Brass, Serra Ascendant, Vamp tutor, Horde of Notions, Titanic Ultimatum, Grixis Charm, Marsh Casualties. Since this was just a head to head, I said, F it! and kept. I play Ascendant, and beat. He plays curfew, I replay, using my Vamp to get a Wasteland to hit his Simic bounce land. I do not draw lands for a few turns. I get him to 8 before he can deal with Ascendant. He then drops a ton of Rav guidlmages, a Reef Shaman, and a Sliver Overlord. I finally get up to Marsh Casualties, killing 5 dudes, and send in with Doran, a Dragonwhatever Outcast, and Saffi, dropping him to three. He attempts to try and get me on a violation for having a colorless kicker and fails. Next turn, I Strip Mine (drew it) after my Outcast poots a baby, another Rav bounce land so that he uses his brand spanking new Azorius Guildmage. I play Horde of Notions; I win.
This was, by far, the best risk vs. reward scenario I can ever remember being in. I looked at my deck – I have like 12 answers to a turn 1 Ascendant by turn 3, but I knew he had a slow, weird mana base so I rode the pale combat giraffe into the maelstrom.
Ah, so fun! Had to share it!
There must be something i’m missing. I dont play commander, but why didnt Lyzolda die ? Because commanders go to the command zone instead of the graveyard ? But they still die, dont they? And why should the controller of Lyzolda have anything to say about that one way or the other?
I’m sorry, which game? I recorded these weeks ago and don’t have the game play notes in front of me. And, quick aside, you can opt for your commander to go to the ‘yard and/or become exiled, if you feel so inclined.
Now this truly is Mono Black at it’s finest.
So much fun to watch even though it’s really scary how synergistic MB Commander decks can become these days.
As always I did not watch the whole deck tech so I’ll just straight up suggest these two:
Buried Ruin and Sensei’s Divining top.
The Ruin I like in this cuz you’re relying on artifacts so much and the top works great with stuff like Satchel, Lili Vess and Imperial Seal (if you need your tutored stuff right away).
I would really love to see more games with this one and of course you trying out the cards I mentioned.
Divining Top is in there – ya gotta watch the build, guys. Otherwise you are just making random suggestions that are either already there or have been answered as to why they are not. Of course Top is in here.
Buried Ruin? No way. I mention how I want lands to jive with my swamps, and my swamps alone. There is no Strip Mine, and I barely wanna play Scrying Sheets. I get your point, but, I can guarantee, that one time you draw it up without Urborg in play while Coffers is on the board you will be more sorry than the times it will get something back. I’d rather play Will, which is just entirely better, doesn’t mess with my mana, and let’s me abuse the gout of mana this deck produces.
holy shit. small world. Ive owned some Usurp albums for years. skramz used to be all i listened to.
Not trying to be a douchenozzle here; just, if I take the time to make these, display what I am playing (just open the video, hit pause, and look), AND explain why I have chosen, or chosen not, to play cards, the least someone could do is watch before commenting. It just comes off as a “betcha didn’t think of that” public attempt at trying to one up me.
I told you guys: don’t assume you’re smarter than me!
Great vids as always, but I was less impressed with this deck than your usual fare. It just seems to sit there making mana and trying to “combo” people out one by one with re-bought Sorin stuff.
With your philosophy on edicts, isn’t Consuming Vapors better than Barter in Blood?
So you got flooded in games 1 and 2, and complained about not flipping lands with Druidic Satchel in game 3 (despite not having any noticeable mana problems). How’s that 48 land working out in other games?
Have you considered Wayfarer’s Bauble? It’s not repeatable like Druidic Satchel, but it is a 3 mana Rampant Growth for other colors.
Xyz, good questions:
This isn’t my normal style, no. But, as I believe I said, there is no sense in just making a weird, bad version of what is potentially the strongest archetype (I still don’t have a Green deck that isn’t just Titan and Genesis Wave and all that boring Big Mana crap). The point of these vids is to show strong mono-colored builds, affording nice new tweaks on old staples or altogether showing something potentially overlooked. Either way, the deck is kinda fun in the ‘uphill battle’ kinda way.
Vapors hits one creatures, and is hardly the Baby Wrath that Barter is. Furthermore, I have the word ‘Barter’ tattooed on my ribs (no joke), so I represent when poss.
Satchel is perfect in this kind of deck. It def has cute factor, but it’s strong. On the whole, I think people play too few land in this format. No MBC deck, one that reliably wants to have a land hit every single turn for exponential oomph should not being playing 35 with the hope of hitting them off draw spells. Satchel shines in a deck with this many land. That said, Bauble is just a little weak, comparatively. I suppose I would cut a land for one, maybe, but, on the whole, I wouldn’t replace Satchel.
Thanks for watching!
ggs, looking forward to W n R
