Sorry, no Round 4.

  1. So I’m about 2 seconds into the first video and I don’t even play modern but I noticed something.

You can fetch any land in your deck – you just need an Urborg in play.

  2. I would seriously play Chandra’s Phoenix before I played Haakon – and this goes for every format in which they are both legal.

Haakon is just actively a bad card, and is also 100 percent useless against Grafdiggers Cage, which doesn’t effect Chandra’s Phoenix at all. As the game goes long Haakon gets worse and Phoenix gets better, not to mention Haakon is the worst chump blocker.

I know this isn’t your deck, but please rework the manabase into something less terrible. The deck needs a basic mountain, and instead of Marsh Flats which fetches more swamp, Scalding Tarns which can get you your RB/RG dual. You don’t have that many T1 plays so that seems way better. You also only need 1 basic forest, you are running 4 life from the loams and have no double green spells.

I also agree with your assessment that there are not enough fetchlands, I would say 8 minimum when you are running loam.

With faithless looting this deck feels like a slightly better version of the pauper madness deck. Should be very good against slower control decks but that’s not exactly what modern is about.

  3. Wow cheer up.

First minute you just go on and on about how bad the deck is, you don’t like it, and you wouldn’t play it. Yeah …

  4. Wow, where did THAT deck come from? I don’t mind to watch some games with rogue brews tho

  5. @aaa: We’ll in case you haven’t watched the videos he’s spot on with his analysis there.

That said I still like watching a vid with a new creative deck every now and then.

  6. The deck is based on Haakon Rock. http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/deck/898

It’s kind of cute with the burning vengeance, but I ditch it all together and added more green sources. I actually like Stinkweed Imp (dredge 5) and Golgari Brownscale (dredge 2 and 2 life). You choose Haakon over the phoenix, because Haakon combos with Nameless Inversion. It was a shame, the combo never came up. The deck is really fun, you always want to empty their hand with Raven’s Crime fast.

  7. Last week I played against this deck several times with GW Hate and it had a hard time doing what its supposed to do. At first I had no idea what it was trying to do when I saw T1 Ravens Crime then when Life from the Loam and Haakon was played I guessed it was supposed to bury me with CA. Unfortunately, Leonin Arbiter stops a lot of decks.

  8. @BT: Chandra’s Phoenix requires you to burn your opponent though and the only way we’re doing that is with a Flame Jab. I don’t really think that is going to work here. I do realize how situational Haakon is, and why this deck is bad, but with Looting I think it could actually work.

@aaa: Well, the deck is really inconsistent but I wanted to give it a run pre and post Looting.

@ethan: Stinkweed Imp and Golgari Brownscale don’t really serve a purpose though. Life from the Loam provides a vast amount of card advantage.

The decklist I have currently for the version with Looting is BR with a green splash. I’m a lot more hopeful for it, if not made evident many times in the vids. :)

  9. Can you please post the decklist review separately? I often want to just skip to the first round, but this player doesn’t let me seek to an unbuffered point in the video. Congrats on the PTQ win.

  10. am i deluding myself, or would vengeful pharaoh work against the geist of st. traft? you have to get hit by him still but its a solution you can mill with life from the loam

  11. Thanks for showing off the deck! It seems pretty quirky and fun, but it feels like the biggest problem is inconsistency, which hopefully Faithless Looting will help with, as you’ve said.

I’m interested to see the decklist you’re working on. Would you be willing to share or are you waiting to unleash it on Monday?

  12. I for my part am always excited to see a brew that tries something completely different. Of course you run the risk of having a bad deck but at least you have surprise on your side, often fun games, and there is always the chance that you can tweak and get something real.
    Thanks for the games!

  13. You mulligan hands that were perfectly reasonable keeps, since you did not count life from the loam as a 2 drop. You then mulligan into hands without Life from the loam, which are often worse. You can cast life without targets to start the engine. It seems you wouldn’t cast it without a target even when it would be the right play; instead passing the turn. A couple times you also missed playing raven’s crime/flame jab when it’s essentially free. Perhaps you haven’t played with life from the loam enough. You should review the vids and rethink the lines of play that could have been opened to you if you played life from the loam.

  14. I don’t know what to think about this deck. I initially dismissed the Loam/Assault shells due to the fact that lands don’t cycle in this format. Then I realized that Horizon Canopy is a card.

Aside from Faithless Looting, I think Horizon Canopy at least deserves 1-2 slots, no?

Is Burning Vengeance even worth it?

How about other Man lands, like Raging Ravine?
