Blast from the Past: Tutorials how they should (not) be…

Hello everyone,

I am constantly searching the web for awesome Magic videos and from time to time I stumble upon a gem or amazing match or…this. I had to laugh out loud after watching it and had to share it with you. It is an old marketing campaign from Wizards of the Coast that aimed to introduce players to the rules. After..well, check it out for yourself :-)

If anyone from Wizards watches the video I would love to hear more about it’s origin. Oh, Aaron, I never imagined R&D to look like this ;-)

If any of you find other interesting campaigns related to Magic the Gathering let me know.

Whoever is craz..uhm, interested enough to see the other 2(!) parts of this epic campaign can find it here…

Part 2

Part 3

  1. Wow! This thing kind of fits right in with some of the awkward humor that’s popular lately, even if it’s not intended as such.

  2. This is from the Learn to Play video that was included into the Starter Box release in the late 90′s, and not really a marketing attempt as such. It really is an attempt to have a learn-to-play video that was fun to watch. The main ‘doctor’ is local comedian Pat Cashman, who was on Almost Live, Seattle’s answer to Saturday Night Live, with Bill Nye (before he was the Science Guy) and Joel McHale (who is now on the NBC show Community). I wasn’t around when it was created, so I don’t have any insight on that.

  3. Thanks for the information, Chris. I think the video is really hilarious and hopefully we can collect a few more fun commercials/tutorials from “old times”. If anyone has a suggestion please let me know and we add it.

  4. The tutorial asked player A (the player who plays first) to draw a card on his first turn! I don’t remember that being part of the game… lol!

  5. Hello Tog,

it is in fact true that for a long time the player that went first also drew first. They changed this only several years after Magic the Gathering was released when it became more and more clear that it gave the starting player to much of an advantage.

  6. That was a bizarre video… I think it would be good for new players, but wow. And does anyone know exactly what year they made the change from the first turn draw card?
