My, how Legacy has taken off since it first came online last year! The events keep on firing with more than the minimum number of players. The format is becoming increasingly popular and is heading in the right direction to become one of the top formats with respect to number of regular players, and for that reason, everyone who has participated in a Legacy event deserves thanks for helping one of the most exciting formats progress. With 490 decks walking away with prizes these last two months, I would expect Legacy to continue to grow, and looking at the top three decks you will notice that Force of Will is not in a single one of them! This is a good sign for new players who are interested in the format because they won’t necessarily need to drop 440 tickets on a single playset in order to be competitive in Legacy, at least not right away. Perusing the deck lists, there are a lot of Combo, Aggro, and Control decks running around, and each one has been rather successful. My only suggestion would be to pack hate against Ad Nauseam Tendrils (ANT) and Dredge in your sideboard, but besides that, simply choose a deck you feel most comfortable with, and bring it to the Daily Events.

Banned and Restricted Changes

Let’s now take a look at the most recent changes to the Legacy Banned and Restricted list.

Announcement Date: December 20, 2010
Effective Date: January 1, 2011

Legacy
Survival of the Fittest is banned.
Time Spiral is unbanned.

Survival of the Fittest was speculated to be banned since it started to take over paper Legacy tournaments, but surprisingly, Survival decks never got out of control on MTGO. There are many possibly reasons why Survival never took over the MTGO tournament scene; perhaps the price of the card was too high for many players to purchase (reaching 65 Tix at one point). Maybe MTGO Legacy players had proper sideboard and main deck hate to cope with Survival, or, possibly, players simply didn’t feel the deck was the best choice for the format. Whatever the reason, paper and MTGO Legacy featured two very different metagames before January 2011. Survival enabled multiple decks to have crazy combos that could go off constantly on Turns 3 or 4, and if that wasn’t enough, Survival could tutor up any creature card that the player needed in the particular situation. I, for one, was not completely sold on the banning, but looking back at paper tournaments and how the Legacy Metagame is shaping up, I think the ban was a good call overall.

Time Spiral was a card that I was surprised to see unbanned, not because of how powerful it is, but simply because the card never really seemed like it needed to be banned in the first place. Time Spiral isn’t anywhere as powerful as the other six-mana blue combo card Minds Desire which is rightfully banned. The only decks at the moment that could really even utilize Time Spiral would be High Tide and Dream Halls, but both these decks have been struggling to put up any wins as of late. I feel the unbanning of Time Spiral won’t have any major impact on the format, and if you didn’t bother picking up your copies earlier, I wouldn’t worry about getting them now that the price is so high.

Dark Horizons

Today’s featured deck is no stranger to the tournament scene. Dark Horizons takes the best of New Horizons and Rock decks and twists them together to form a formidable list. Dark Horizons will usually begin the game either by accelerating into powerful cards, or by using disruption to stall its opponent while its pilot gains board control. The deck utilizes Mox Diamond to facilitate casting powerful spells on Turn 1, such as Dark Confidant, which help fuel the player’s hand and provide for the card advantage necessary to outrace the opponent. If that wasn’t enough, the Mox also enables a Turn 1 Hymn to Tourach or Gerrards Verdict, both of which can have a devastating effect on your opponent. The deck also uses a variety of discard spells, such as Thoughtseize, Duress, and Inquisition of Kozilek to further hinder the opponent’s game plan. Combine these simple tools with a variety of removal, board sweepers, land destruction, and beaters in order to have an excellent match against almost any deck face.

However, though Dark Horizons has a variety of synergistic elements and tools, the deck is not without weakness. Dark Horizons struggles against certain combo decks, including Ad Nauseam Tendrils (ANT) and Dredge, and if the opponent happens to play first, the Dark Horizons pilot will find that the odds of winning Game 1 are greatly in the opponent’s favor. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible to win Game 1 on the draw, but it becomes much more difficult. Given that both Dark Horizons and ANT are currently among the top three most frequently played decks in the format, one may assume Dark Horizons is a horrible choice right now – not true! To combat the otherwise difficult ANT matchup, as well as the frequently-encountered mirror matchup, I altered the main deck and sideboard of Dark Horizons to have a better chance of obtaining victory. Let’s take a look at the list I chose to run.

Dark Horizons by KillerOwen Legacy Daily #2105099 on 03/01/2011

I will now discuss the deck in much greater detail, as well as how to combat Ad Nauseam Tendrils (ANT) and Dredge (another difficult combo matchup) in the video below.

There you have it, folks! Even with a few horrible misplays and a variety of opponents, I was able to walk away with some packs. I hope these videos show you some of the power that Dark Horizons has, and that you were able to find the article and videos both entertaining and useful. If you have any comments or questions about the deck or videos, feel free to post a comment below, or contact me at ForcingtheWill@gmail.com or MTGO at KillerOwen. 1. #3 Please, Dredge. I am playing a paper version, need to learn to play it better I think. LED-less, if you can.

  2. Round 1 game 1! Couldn’t you have shuffled your library with KotR to give yourself another shot at hitting a Deed right at the end?

  3. More to the point, shuffling with Kotr gives you 3 more chances at flipping a zero cost or land. You missed that one repeatedly ;).

  4. I have added a poll to the article so please vote again if you have posted in the comment section. This will make it easier to keep track. Thanks!

  5. Round 1 Game 1 you could have played Mox Diamond without discarding a land and making the Goyf 3/4 so that you could have attacked that turn. You could have also shuffled your library with your Knight of the Reliquary to Top 3 fresh cards and hopefully not die.

  6. Great to see a new forcing the will! really enjoyed as always.
voted for Dredge (and also want to cast the anti vote for ANT :D)

  7. Thanks for setting up a poll Marin I appreciate it. Keep those votes coming in guys. You have until Wednesday night so get all your buddies to get their votes in as well.

When I watched my replays the first thing I noticed was that I missed the KOTR interaction with Bob and the top. If you watched the Deck Tech you will notice I use that specific example of my game 1 so that you won’t make the same mistake that I did.

@ Lunco: Pitching the Mox didn’t even come to my mind when I was playing. That’s a great point! I almost never pitch my Mox Diamonds, but now that you pointed that out I will remember that when I am playing with Mox Diamonds again.

    Thanks for all the repsonses

  8. Yo. awesome shout out for Soap Opera. now to finish watching the event you played. Ha Ha

  9. I like subtle plays such as tapping Karakas to cast one of two StPs. That’s manly. I would make that play 9/10!

  10. @ CSeraph & ChrisKool: Haha I have to say one of my better plays ;) I did that because I was just that confidant in the decks and my ability to win. Honestly I can’t think of any reason as to why I did this besides not paying attention, but I would never never do that :P

@ whiffy: Gotta support Classic somehow. Took us long enough to get more people in the format.

  11. Love this series. Excellent coverage of the meta and love the deck breakdown. My only complaint is that I wish you wrote these so much more often (probably unrealistic). Very high quality article.

  12. @ StewardUlk : The reason for not adding Bog was a personal choice. I had trouble with the manabase, and after playing the deck for some time I found that I wasn’t able to use the Kotr to fetch the bog until turn 3-4 if I was lucky enough to have one in my opening hand. By this time Dredge will usually either win or be behind so I decided not to add a singleton copy even though it can be very useful. I try to avoid come into play tapped cards as much as possible especially land cards in Legacy. My gameplan for dredge is Jailers and a bunch of cards in my sideboard, but luckily for me I didn’t need to worry about Dredge. Once again this is a personal choice, and by all means do what you are comfortable with. I encourage all players to tweak their decks to fit the current meta, and make it so that you are comfortable with both the maindeck and sideboard. So basically the reason I didn’t add Bog was that I simply didn’t feel it was necessary to add it to the deck, but I did think about adding a single copy multiple times.

@ gamemaster32: I’m glad you enjoy my series so much! I will do my best to deliver as much content as I can, but sadly I am not able to do the 2 articles a month like I used to be especially since I added the you choose the deck portion of the article. This makes it extremely hard since my articles don’t usually go up right away which gives me less time to build the deck to my liking, get some practice, and enter an event. Just rest assured I have plenty of articles to go.

@ CSeraph: True Kira is only really played in Merfolk and the occasional Bant deck, but that is no excuse for me missing the interaction with Karakas. I appreciate others pointing out my mistakes since it makes me much less likely to repeat those same mistakes.

Voting will close in 24 1/2 hours from now so make sure to get those votes in if you havn’t yet! Thanks again to everyone who posted and voted.

  13. Awesome promo foil Vindicate /deed / Wasteland !! i enjoyed a lot as always!! but in that game 1 round 1…omg what a missplay, but it helps a lot to learn about it!!
Why d u prefer Jailer instead of Gerrard’s Verdict in main deck?l its just for that DE which u expected some dredges?

    GREAT JOB!!

    TURBO ELDRAZI

  14. @ LOIS: Thanks those promos took some time to get, and yes g1r1 was awful at the end I’m pretty positive I had a good chance of winning that one otherwise. I chose Jailer exactly for that reason. I was playtesting the deck before I entered the Daily Event and I started off 2 different games with me playing first and thinking to myself this is an unstoppable hand having a land, mox diamond, and gerrard’s verdict. I said to myself I am definitely going to win this one, and both time I cast gerrard’s verdict to find my opponent was playing dredge. At least in a tourney after R1 you can at least know what your opponent is playing beforehand, but after seeing Dredge so much in the practice room I expected to run into it. Lucky for me I didn’t need to face it in the Daily Event.

  15. Just a note, it’s just one Pernicious Deed. It’s not plural unless you’re talking about multiples of the card. Also, when you’re saying “pithing needle”, pretend it’s “pissing needle” but you have a lisp. I’m not trying to be a dick, just trying to help.
