We have a new contender in the house. Meet your new reigning champ, Stone-Blade! With Stone-Blade occupying about 20% of the top winning deck slots, players need to be prepared to face it. There are a few reasons as to why I believe Stone-Blade has picked up such popularity in Legacy as of late. With both Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Stoneforge Mystic being banned in STD, Legacy players have been able to pick up the deadly duo for a fraction of the cost. With STD players selling their copies and having prices drop like crazy in a couple of days, it wasn’t hard to pick up either of these cards for a reasonable price. Also, I think that with the banning, a great deal of STD players transitioned to Legacy rather than selling off their copies and taking a major hit on what they paid for them.

Hive Mind dropped a spot to #2 but is still putting up an impressive amount of wins. From there, the decks start to taper off into the usual combo, aggro, and control decks. Reanimator has been seeing quite a bit more play with all the goodies from New Phyrexia to help aid the deck. Also Dredge has dropped from the #9 spot all the way down to #20. With all the graveyard hate being packed into sideboards, I expect Dredge to take a small vacation. Be sure to prepare against Stone-Blade and Hive Mind, as they comprise almost 1/3 of the winning decks.

Hive Mind
Here we go! Time to cover the deck you’ve all been waiting to see: Hive Mind! Hive Mind is a fairly straightforward deck, but it has many small different interactions that greatly impact the turnout of the games. The main idea behind the Hive Mind deck is to accelerate into an early Show and Tell so that you can put a Hive Mind or Emrakul, the Aeons Torn onto the battlefield, or to hard cast a Hive Mind. If you cheat an Emrakul into play, the game plan is to just wait a turn and attack your opponent with Emrakul the next turn, which will usually end with your opponent conceding from the game. If you cheated or hard cast a Hive Mind into play, you will then want to immediately follow Hive Mind with one of the many Pact cards that the deck runs. I would suggest not playing your Hive Mind until you have a Pact in your hand that you can successfully cast since your opponents will have the opportunity to destroy your Hive Mind before you can play one of the Pacts. There is a third way to win, but it is one that is rarely used. If need be, you can wait until you are able to produce 4 colorless mana and 1 red mana and cast a Pact of the Titan to start to attack your opponent with a 4/4 Giant. I wouldn’t suggest this line of play unless you are in a desperate situation where you have no other options remaining.

Now that you know what the Hive Mind deck is trying to accomplish, we can take a look at the deck I will be piloting the Legacy Daily Event.

I will now cover the cards in the Hive Mind as well as provide gameplay from a Legacy Daily Event, along with a couple of Tournament Practice Room games.

Well, there you have it: not my best performance ever, but I still managed to go 2-2 in a Legacy Daily Event (even though I didn’t even play the 2 games I won :)) and won 2 Tournament Practice Room games with the Hive Mind deck. Hive Mind is currently the #2 deck in the format, but be aware that players have started adjusting their decks and play styles to combat Hive Mind. If this seems like the kind of deck you would enjoy playing, I would suggest picking up the cards you need to start playing. If you have any comments or questions about the deck or videos, feel free to post a comment below, or contact me either by email at ForcingtheWill@gmail.com or on MTGO at KillerOwen.

You Choose the Deck!
In this section I let you, the reader, choose which deck I will be covering in my next article! Here is a list of decks that you have to choose from, followed by a list of rules for voting.

In my Turbo Drazi article, I tested something new out in this section. I gave you the option of even more decks to choose from for my article, and I said that if the turnout were good, I’d continue to provide more options for you. Well, you guys came out in force and got those votes in, so I will continue to provide you with a larger amount of deck choices!

A Giant Thank You to All My Readers and Followers!
Before I end this article, I’d like to take a moment to once again thank all of my followers and readers. I never expected the type of support and thanks from my readers that you guys have given me. There are no words I could use to express the thanks for all of the positive comments and thanks that I’ve received. I don’t consider myself a professional Magic player, but rather just a person who loves to play Eternal Formats. I have made countless mistakes in the games I’ve brought to you, and still I have many players coming to me with questions, thanks, or for advice on the format, decks, tips, and to just playtest and chat. When I started, I never thought my articles and videos would interest so many people. Thank you all for everything, especially the friends and readers who helped me continue writing when I was just starting. I hope to continue to bring you all articles and videos that you can enjoy. So I leave you for now with a giant ‘Thank You!’

That’s it for this installment of Forcing the Will. I hope you enjoyed it! Please leave any comments, questions, or requests you have (positive or negative), and I will do my best to respond to them. And until next time, may the Force of Will be with you!

  1. I’d like to point out that I wasn’t able to upload the deck tech for Hive Mind. I will try to get an upload in so that it can be added to the article. My sincerest apologies.

  2. Might want to practice your Hive Mind mirror a little.

For instance, in Rd1 you counter his pact with a REB leaving you tapped out if he has another counter. Instead, you could just let it resolve, he will have to tap out on upkeep, and you can just try to resolve the spell the next turn. It leaves you vulnerable to him drawing red mana source, but you can also draw a different pact.

  3. thx i always look forward to this article series.

too bad it was two mirrormatches and two byes, still a very good watch!

what are your thoughts on the flusterstorm your opponent included in his hive mind?

  4. RUNES! Mother of RUNES! AHHHH!!

I like your content though. I’ll never be able to afford a legacy deck so I like watching videos like these. Keep it up!

  5. Hey All
Sorry it took so long to respond. I just got back from my trip.

@ BT: The mirror was a match up that I really struggled with when testing this deck. There were times where I could just beat them right out, but most of the time it was a real struggle to get a win. A lot of Hive Mind players have been adding Platinum Angel in the sideboard for the mirror which helps out a great deal vs Hive Mind, but not so much vs Emrakul.

@ milegyenanevem: While I agree the hand did seem pretty good I was going to rely on drawing a land off of that Ponder otherwise I would more than likely lose the game. Also the hand wasn’t a hand that I felt comfortable with against the mirror since Hive Mind has no problem going off on turn 2 or 3. I’m not saying the hand wasn’t good and in hindsight I should of kept the hand since I ended up mulligan into an even worse hand.

@ Martin: Thanks for the comments I’m glad you enjoyed the article. I actually wanted to get a set of Flusterstorms before I played the deck, but with the Commander decks coming out just before I filmed these videos I didn’t pick them up due to their price. Flusterstorm is great vs the Hive Mind mirror and against Counter battles since it protects you and allows you to counter your own Pacts so you don’t have to pay the upkeep costs. I would definitely recommend picking up a playset of Flusterstorm.

@ homersexual: Thank you I’m glad you enjoy watching the Legacy videos, but never say never. I remember when I first got into MTGO I never thought I would be able to afford to play EXT, but over time I finally built up an EXT collection and eventually was able to transfer over to Classic/Legacy. It took many years to build my collection, but it was definitely worth the wait. If there’s a format you want to play work your way into it, and if you keep at it you will eventually be able to play in that format.

Thank you everyone for your comments and voting. I am already working on the Cephalid Breakfast deck, and hope you bring you some wins in a Legacy Daily Event in my next article.
