Top Winning MTGO Legacy Decks Breakdown

Phew! Legacy players sure aren’t giving me any breaks with these Legacy Metagame reports! Legacy is still going strong even after the events of the Grand Prix. Going over the top decks, we can see that there is a good balance between Combo, Control, and Aggro decks in the field with the Hive Mind deck dominating the format, supplanting the previously dominant combo deck Ad Nauseam Tendrils (ANT). ANT took a big fall from the number-one deck all the way to the eighth spot, and Hive Mind jumped from eleventh all the way to first. This could be due to the new Legacy staple Mental Misstep, which has already been shaping the Metagame. With any deck being able to counter a spell with converted mana cost 1, Mental Misstep puts a huge dent in the ANT deck, but I will cover Mental Misstep later on in the article. Speaking of Mental Misstep, let’s take a look at the Top 8 decks from Grand Prix Providence:

Let’s take a quick look at something interesting in this Top 8. If you’ll notice, the deck that took the whole tournament didn’t run a single copy of Force of Will, which is a first for a Legacy Grand Prix. Another interesting fact is that only six of the eight decks ran copies of Force of Will, totaling 24 copies while seven of the eight decks ran copies of Mental Misstep, including the first-place deck, totaling 27 copies. If you take the time to read the events of the Grand Prix, you will notice that many players weren’t ready to face Mental Misstep and that the card is already showing its dominance in the Legacy Metagame, which leads us to the next portion of this article.

Mental Misstep: If nothing else, pick up 4 copies of this! I can’t stress how important this card is in the Eternal formats.
Psychic Surgery: I forgot to mention this card in my video. Surgery is an amazing card for formats that like to abuse tutors, and as we all know Classic is such a format with its Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor, Imperial Seal, and Mystical Tutors. Even in Legacy, when an opponent plays a Ponder, Surgery will allow you to alter the top of their library and exile one of the top two cards. This ability is insane, as it allows you to stop players from wanting to cast tutors or shuffling their library in fear of losing one of the cards that will enable them to win the game. I would suggest getting a minimum of 2 copies, but 4 is safer in my opinion.
