I was thinking about this draft and I realized I overlooked something in my last game of the last match. I checked and I in fact did overlook something
I’m happy that I realized it before re-watching the video, but pretty bummed I didn’t catch it at the time (even if it wasn’t consequential to the match result)
See if you can find it when you are watching Round 4
I’m really surprised you didn’t run white. I know the bottom end didn’t look awesome, but Ajani and Serra Angel are straight up bombs, and O-Ring deals with just everything. I’d definitely have run white/blue. Buuuuut I probably wouldn’t have done as well as you did either
Just watched the deckbuild. Ugh, that blue is Invocation and a bunch of filler. Definitely would have run GWr, methinks.
Game 1 last match at 10:48, if you had cast talrands invocation instead of the spider, attack him for 6 with the drake and the griffin, block his odric with a drake, hit him with griffin and another drake. I think that would’ve given you the best course to winning. As is, i’m still confused why you didn’t attack with the griffin after you played the spider?
In regards to what you missed that was inconsequential to the last match… you didn’t stack the Ring and Hydra triggers properly? You should add 1 from the ring, then it gets doubled by the ability.
You didn’t take Chronotmaton into consideration? That card is very good!
Marshall, are you talking about the ordering of the ring trigger and the Hydra trigger? I kept thinking “if we leave him at 1 health I’m going to cry!”
Weird weird last game…he never had the unsummon, if you would’ve just pumped your water courser for 2 when you attacked with 3 creatures, you would’ve won right there. But since he was obviously representing an unsummon, using your mana for divination is a fine play.
So okay, you put him on having an unsummon in hand, which means swicheroo was a horrible play as it would’ve just given him a free creature. I was waiting for him to just blow you out with it….
But…turns out he didn’t actually have the unsummon after all and just happened to block wrong that one time, so your misplay on swicheroo turned out to be okay….
The real question is, assuming he did actually have the unsummon and you continue to play around it and don’t use the swicheroo, would you still have won? Also, another correct play might be to just pump water courser and make him use it instead of divination…..
Last game was exciting!
Why didn’t you consider green/white? Your white cards each individually seem better than, or at least equal to, your blue cards.
Oblivion Ring > = Tal Rand’s
Serra Angel >= Tal Rand’s
Ajani >= Switcheroo
Attended Knight >= Watercourser
Knight of Glory >= Artic Aven
And, at least to me,
Sunstrider + Show of Valor + Silvercoat Lion + Captain’s call >= 2x Divination + 2x Unsummon
Of course, comparing individual cards like this doesn’t show that the green/white deck, as a whole, would be better than, or equal to, the green/blue deck you ultimately went with. But it seems close enough to have warranted pulling down the white cards from the sideboard and seeing how it looked!
You stacked the Hydra and Ring triggers wrong – could have had a 14/14 Hydra!
I think the Beast Tracker is better than it looks. While it’s not card advantage, it significantly increases the average quality of your draw which is very relevant in limited. It’s an effect quite similar to looting in what it accomplishes. On a body that can also attack and block it’s a very reasonable effect.
I know that Green White isnt the best combination but it I have to agree with “the guy” it just felt like you were forcing blue for the invocations. WG with a red splash or even without the red seems like it would have been better than UG.
To me you talked about just about every pairing other than WG, is there something we missed?
(correction)
…combination but I have to agree…
If you switched for the bird you could of attacked the next turn and won.
In m1g1, attacking with the Spiked Baloth so he could trade it off for his 1/1s when you had the board controlled was about the worst misplay you’ve made in a while Marshall. But I understand that not blocking the subsequent attack was a misclick.
so in the third game I hear you say that it is a 13/13 hydra. I know that’s wrong because it shouldn’t be 13/13. it is a 6/6 both triggers go on the stack it becomes a 7/7 then doubles to 14/14. I think “ah well I’m sure marshall will realize his mistake when the triggers come up.” and then you don’t. You let it become a 13/13 by doing the triggers in the wrong order.
I was a little freaked by the mistake and scrolled down to the comments to see if anyone had called you out on it yet only to find the top comment to be you talking about an unmentioned mistake in the last match. Can I safely assume that we are talking about the same mistake?
In round 2, match 1 I think you could have played around titanic growth. When attacking with your trample guy, you could have killed the two 1 thoughness guys and been able to block his last creature when he attacks.
As far as I have watched at this moment.
And your realize this 2 minutes after I write this…
I have to agree with several others; aside from the Innvocations all your blue cards are kind of marginal. The Innvocations were powerful but there were just as many games where you had blank cards in hand due to awkward mana.Straight G/R seemed like the plan to me. You’re aggressive with great mana and removal- the ideal deck to punish all the durdle, 3+ color decks you often see in sealed formats.
For the mistake in the last game/round, I assume you mean the trigger stacking with the Hydra + Ring? Oh well, just remember and be more careful next time.
Thanks for the content as always!
Yeah, blue didn’t seem nearly as good as you were giving it credit for. It seemed like the obvious colour to play was green, and you didn’t really seem to give much thought as to what other colour would best support the green cards? (But rather you seemed to pick blue first, and then was stuck with green because it was the only colour that gave you enough playables to fill out a deck.)
Also I feel like you way underrate the Beast Tracker, at least in this build. It tutors for about half of your creatures, including an Acidic Slime (which is absurd) and a Sentinel Spider. The only time it’s bad are if you’re hurting for land, and even then, it’s still a 2/1, which is usually fine. And Chronomaton! Sure, it’s not amazing, but it’s a one-drop that is flexible and has the potential to win games if it’s not answered. If Kraken Hatchling is in the discussion, then it deserves to be considered, I think.
In m1g1 I appreciated you questioning blowing up the swamp and then he just snap pitches a Nighthawk to the goblin. Obviously, you made the right play :).
Is it that you doubled the counters on the hydra before putting on the counter from the ring?
“Also I feel like you way underrate the Beast Tracker, at least in this build. It tutors for about half of your creatures, including an Acidic Slime (which is absurd) and a Sentinel Spider.”
It also tutors for Deadly Recluse, which is a pretty good answer to a lot of threats.
Ring+Deadly Recluse… You seriously undervalued that combination of cards the entire event. Every game you had the 2 in play with another creature they weren’t together. Recluse is the best creature in your deck aside from Slime for that card to be attached to. It makes for the most powerful threat with the ability to 1 any blocker and deal the rest to the player. It almost makes it unblockable.
Also, Match 3 Game 2 you left your Baloth back. Sure he could have just double blocked with 2 tokens but you didn’t even consider that he would just blocked with the first striker that you planned to spear anyway. And you speared the guy after given him another card and mana to work with to come up with an out for the spear. I understand leaving up options by waiting as long as possible but I think we both know regardless the latest you should’ve played that spear was on his upkeep if you wanted to give him the option to save it at the cost of using mana for his turn.
Hey. cool vids! thank you for putting these out so fast
However, I find myself strongly agreeing with some posters above me, especially mikerpiker. You completly overlooked white, and it seems you were just set on playing blue the moment you saw a couple of invocations staring at you. That’s fine – a prerealease is more about playing what’s fun than about winning – but from a strategic point of view your white cards were more powerful than the blue cards. You should have at least considerd white seriously. Green, however, was a good choice.
I also strongly agree with David about the beast tracker. he tutors up either acidic slime, or a spiked baloth or any of your spiders, making it a very strong since between all these choices you can always get something relevent to either answear a threat from the opponent or press your advantage.
I think you could have won the second game in the last match if you were more aggressive with the Griffin because you ended up chumping Odric anyways with drakes. You didn’t give yourself an opportunity to win by not attacking if you were to lose anyway. I believe your one missed swing with the Griffin for 4 was the difference in that game. I know you didn’t know that you were not going to draw another Invocation but I think that was the perfect draw to get you back in. Of course hindsight is 20/20…
I have to agree on most people opinions about GWr. I actually paused the video before you even began talking, looked over the cards to see if my build would be similar to yours without any outside influence. I saw the invocations, but nothing else to pull me into blue. Switcheroo I find to be highly overrated by most people. I think a very good way to think about that card is a slightly worse / better Threaten depending on the situation.
Also, staring at the Quirion Dryad in your sideboard for several hours was less than fun
She’s just another card that can win you the game with not too much downside. At worst it draws out the bounce spells.
Youre mistake was taking Odric. Switcheroo the Aven squire and attack for 2, hes tapped out.
Doesnt have haste so no.^
