OK, I wanted to be first to the comments with the acknowledgment that both Marshall and I glossed over the crucial text on Engulfing Slagwurm, talking about our “many options,” most of which involved some amount of damage via blocking.
When one actually *reads* Engulfing Slagwurm, one sees that damage via blocking isn’t going to happen because of the “destroy” clause. I realized the error shortly after finishing the recording and groaned to Marshall about it, but it is what it is. I’m just *particularly* annoyed because that spot was absolutely one of the most interesting points in the draft, and was one of the reasons I picked this one to walk through, but we totally botched the analysis.
Well, as it says in the blurb, Past Ryan finally gets something right while the critics screw it up. Hopefully you ignored all our our talk of blocking and figured out how to deal 7 to the slagwurm like Past Ryan did…
Just wanted to say, after watching the first vid, I like how you are easily able to disassociate yourself from the person who played the games and recognize the misplays and the correct lines that should have been taken, but weren’t.
It ends up not mattering, but it is a good exercise. Whenever I draft a great deck and go 0-2 drop, I sometimes watch my replays to see if I made the correct lines of play. I’m often surprised at both the number of avoidable and unavoidable limited losses.
Once again an awesome draft – you guys really rock. The slagwurm spot is really complicated. I am probably wrong but i think that you can win directly without having to ultimate koth… it is really tempting to do so and very instinctive same goes for trying to kill the slagwurm
however, if you instead use the mana ability you kill him you have 10 mana available –
sacrifice two of your dudes to give dross hopper flying and pay 4 mana for the celebration triggers to deal him 4
then attack with two of flyers for 5
and finish him by sacking two other dudes to the dross hopper
in fact you can either do what i just suggested
or ultimate koth deal him three with your mountains
sacrifice two dudes to dross hopper deal him four with furnace celebration
and finish him in the air for five
You guys just get better !!!
Bring it on, more retro-drafts =)

You know how I know you talk way too much? It took you until 2:39 in to talk about the draft.
@drn thanks, and could not agree more. Being able to look at your gameplay in a frank manner is a skill unto itself.
@Jakobicek I will have have to check out that line of play when I get rewatch the videos, sounds good to me though.
@ Scandanavia Jules Verne – Thanks dude, appreciate it
@anonymous Will try that out, thanks!
@Kevin Ya we have been known to talk a lot. I won’t apologize for it, but I hope you can find some value in the videos even if we do take the time to explain things more than other draft videos.
- Marshall
I had a chuckle that both of you thought the difference was Shield. I just saw the hellion and knew that’s what you took out for the glider once you said you played it.
Interesting debate on furnace celebration and gear grabber. Those discussions are one reason I keep following you guys. even when I can’t play too much limited.
I just lost to furnace celebration yesterday
Works well with rusted slasher and R/G Dinos in general.
I used to share the same opinion but now I’m making it a hate draft target if I’m not trying to play it myself.
lol. I love you guys. So… I’m going to have to call Marshall out on Furnace Celebration. Its not an ideal card, but it is still something worth using every now and then. I’ve been drafting sacrifice effects higher anyways, and the Celebration can be okay in decks that do that.
btw, now that I’ve seen you guys do a few retrodrafts and live drafts, I have to say that the Retro mode is significantly better. It just fits your guys’s style so much better, so please bring more of them!!
Furnace celebration may not be too good, but it is amusing. For example, Match 2, Game 1, you could have done what you did to win, or you could have played the second furnace celebration with the dross hopper then next turn use Koth’s -2 for extra mana, sac the spin engine and gold myr, pay 8 to deal 8 damage and then swing with scudder and dross hopper (lol, flying relevant) for lethal.
Been waiting for your vid for what seemed like forever. Totally worth the wait. Good draft, pretty good play. Outstanding analysis, as always. Thanks a lot, guys.
Hey guys –
Love the videos as always and I particularly love the retro drafts. Two things:
1. Don’t listen to the people who say you should talk less. The content is great and never boring.
2. It seems to me there was a play mistake in G1R1 that both of you glossed over. It’s SUPER nitty but nevertheless seems like something you would normally cover. When you whiff on the clone shell you chose to put a mountain under it rather than a swamp. That land is going to be exiled and since you already have both swamps you should want to keep as many mountains as you can (even if you’ll only reach it if you hit the bottom of your deck or if it gets reshuffled) because of Koth. Am I missing something?
That was very entertaining guys. And full of solid info. I especially like that you guys almost came to blows over Furnace Celebrations! I am not a fan of the card but can see how it’s better now than in SSS. Slasher/Wellspring make it much more appealing to play the Celebration.
Keep it up and looking forward to more.
Great video, I like that you gusy get indepth about the topic, and your ‘discussions’ about cards such as Furnace Celebrations are funny.
Keep it up!
LOL @ Marshall’s exasperation over the furnace celebration pick!
