Man I love block constructed…
Oh wait, is this draft?
I would have played Jet over a second Portent I think, but hard to argue with success.
I completely agree with the build. Your deck needs to be the agressor or you lose. No time to cast rage of purphoros or to leave up divine verdict mana. Magma jet is interesting because it can prevent his early drops from trading with your guys and lets you keep attacking. With double lightning strike it also increase the chance of burning your opponent out. Finally, if there ever was a deck for double portent, this is it!!!!!
Wow, amazingly sweet deck. So insanely explosive, it really speaks to my inner Boros. That deck seems like it could go even 6-0 and not break a sweat.
I’ve been really looking forward to seeing somebody really put Akroan Hoplite through its paces like that. Too bad so many sweet cards in the deck were so much “Still had all these.”
I do think that for maindeck, the Magma Jet would have been better than the Traveling Philosopher. It just shores up so many holes in the interactivity your deck had, and still punches for two when it comes down for it.
Great draft as always, Marshall!
I love it especially because I played aggro WR draft deck yesterday. However, in comparison with your deck, mine was like retarded cousin, lol.
I had Favorite and Akroan hoplite, 2x Riders, Phalanx Leader and other stuff. I went 2-1 (Swiss because I’m noob) and the first lose was because of I conceded match instead of just game (and the first game I got my opponent on 2 life but then he just ran over me) I think aggro works great in Theros
Great deck, Marshall.
I do believe, like everyone like here, that the magma jet should have been in the main deck.
I also think that a lower creature count is the way to go in this aggressive theros draft decks. In a moment you said “because you only need one creature in the battlefield, right?” during the draft, but you valued more creatures, even heroic creatures, but little heroic enablers. I know that you might feel uncomfortable drafting an “eggs + basket” deck, since you might get blown up, but if you don’t you just get random bad creatures (and you didn’t get phalanx leader, that supports better that strategy). Sometimes you just want to play the “hope you don’t have it” game, since there isn’t that much cheap answers in the format.
I don’t mean to be disrespectful to you or your opponents, but I think you won because they didn’t play well (not playing around portent or stuff like that) and you got two fabled heroes that made everything in your deck better.
This archetype is a lot of fun to play and draft, it’s not necessarily good, but love to see content like this (UB control is a great deck, but boringggg). I hope to hear from you to know if do/don’t agree with me in the past statements. Thanks for the content!
Can I get a refund? Those games went way too fast. Reminds me of the good ole’ days back in Gatecrash with Boros all the time!
Next time, Marshall, you need to build us a blue/black grindy deck with Ashiok in order to give us loooong games!
Thanks for the great content as always!
Why weren’t you attacking with your fabled hero against his Baleful Eidelon in m3g1?
Listen to the podcast and watch every video you make. After hearing you deride RW and avoid it for weeks, at least you didn’t run away when some sweet options presented themselves. A+ for not doing another blue / black or blue / green deck like most videos I have seen for Theros, and for sticking with the plan when a few other options came around. When you said, “this is for you guys,” I cheered.
This might not be the “best” deck in Theros, but man, it was fun to watch! And I’m sure it was fun to play. And isn’t that what its all about?
Last game I think you missed subbing in Glare of Heresy (the white-white hater spell), but obviously didn’t matter much.
I probably would have found room for the magma jet because of the scry 2 ability. Your deck was absolutely bonkers and the only way you lose games w/ that kind of a deck is if you continually miss land drops or get flooded. While its less likely to get flooded w/ 16 lands, the scry 2 ability makes that even less likely, and jet can efficiently remove pesky baleful eidolons and leafcrown dryads that stand in your way. Portent is actually my favorite “removal” spell for this archetype because you punch through a ton of early damage and by the time they stick something big, you’re able to just steal it and kill them. Rage of Purphoros is awful. You really don’t want to cast a 5 mana 4 dmg spell when your opponent has a nessian asp out or any other giant dude w/ 5+ toughness (really awkward).
I don’t know if rw is the best deck but it’s definitely the deck you need to keep on your radar the most in Theros. You either have to be ready to jump into it if it’s open, or be ready to stop it if you’re playing other colors. If you see mountain, plains on your opponent’s side of the board, your early game plan should automatically be to play defense. The biggest reason I love this set is because you can be successful with almost any color combination as long as you’re able to read the signals and hop into colors that are open. u/g, r/w, u/w, mono black, u/b, b/r minotaurs, etc etc etc. What more could you ask for? :p
Keep up the great work Marshall!
I think Magma Jet belonged in the main, since it had a 3-purpose in that deck. Remove a blocker, keep you drawing gas, or to the dome for reach. I think its better than even lightning strike for this deck since you really want to constantly draw gas. I’d have pulled out one of the spearpoints to make room for it – they’re just not the most amazing creatures on your own, and it’s not common that you’ll actually bestow one of them for 6 mana.
This was just masturbating over the ultimate aggressive boros deck. Theres nothing to really learn here other than ‘get incredibly lucky’. Marshal talks about how he doesn’t really like this archetype on the poscast, and unless you get handed 2 fabled heroes and all the tricks and support to make them good, it isn’t great. Match 2 could have gone badly, the other guys deck was generally better.
Kinda boring but awesome deck :).
magma jet…pretty good card you guys.
Great draft. Loved the draws in rd 3, game 1. I don’t think there was a way for you to lose, and I felt sad for your opponent. Like a few others, I think magma jet would have been good in the main – it kills early creatures, troublesome little creatures (like the harpy), and it can get the last 2 points of damage through.
@prehemencie: I’m pretty sure he was attempting to play around Divine Verdict.
WHAT A JOKE. MAGMA JET IN SIDEBOARD. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHY DO PEOPLE PAY YOU TO DISCUSS LIMITED. YOU COULD NOT BE ANY WORSE.

The Boros Srikes Back!!! Great draft!
