G2 you have to beastow the steed with the lampad, because the you can attack and keep the gorgon back to block, that would have gave you some life and time to continue attaching. And, most important, the ordeal woold not have worked
One thing to learn from this draft: there is an abundance of excellent green 4 drops. Whenever you try to decide if you want a solid 3 drop or a slightly more powerful 4 drop (like Marshal here with the centaur courser VS Nylea’s disciple, generally it’s wise to go for the 3 drop. This is not something universal about magic, but specifically in Theros, 4 mana is the cost of so many good green cards that you can prioritize other mana costs over it.
In M2G1, are you forgetting about the death touch on the bow? Countered and bestowed Flesh mad steed & Disciple could have gotten free swings in on several turns while the Gorgon hung back on defense.
I’m sorry, but I just don’t get leaving fleshmad steed back on defense in M2G2. I counted 10 damage that you could have done without any difficulty, because you had other defensive back-up and trading the steed for anything he has is just value… His deck was playing too much removal for the steeds to matter on defensive, but I’d like to hear other points of view if people want to argue
This way M2G2 would not have been as close as it turned out, because he would have been dead before anything significant could have happened.
i agree w/ the other comments. you actually could’ve crushed your opponent in 2-3 turns had you bestowed lampad onto your steed instead of the gorgon in m2g1. the steed had just as much power as your gorgon at that point and smashing w/ a 5/5 intimidate that grows each turn w/ bow is back breaking when you have the gorgon back on defense
You could have won M3G3 by casting your creatures pre-combat, I think. You can hold up the Satyr against Stymied Hopes, but once he declines to cast it, you could have gotten in for a point of damage at least once by my count. That would have made the difference by the end.
What grindy drawn-out games! I found that all of the gods equipments (except the hammer) seems to cause that in games. Thanks for the content, Marshall! I see that some people are starting to play around and making the Izzet deck work in Theros – it does have to play some sub-standard cards and probably requires just the right amount of skill to make work!
I like these videos, but I swear, all I see are black/green, black/blue Theros drafts -_-
bow has death touch.
M2G2: You were waiting for 11 mana to whip back Gorgon and monstrous it in the same turn, but you could end step the whip and monstrous when you untap.
@Last Anonymous commenter, read Whip of Erebos. There is no end stepping it, as it says it only works at sorcery speed.
To note: opponent punted M2G2 as badly as Marshall punted game 1. He Titan’s Strengthed a Hoplite to kill a Keepsake, where all he needed to do was point it at the Labyrinth Champion and it was lethal with the deal 2 heroic trigger, at the end of the 28th minute. Couldn’t believe it when I saw it.
I feel sorry for that guy in the round 1. Losing to the timer always feels so bad. Every time it happens to me I say to myself that it was for the last time. But sometimes you just cannot avoid it. I guess one could always play faster but some situations objectively require more thinking from one player than from the other. Other times you might lag a bit.. I really wish wizards will change something soon. Maybe add 5 mins when you get to game three? Or tranfer unused sideboarding time to the game time?
So many playmistakes. I listen to the podcast and I generally like your videos, but all that drafting theory and sensible card evaluation sort of fades slightly, when I then watch you make 10 terrible combat decisions within the span of one game. Also, for a guy who talks a lot about value, I was surprised to see you play the emissary over the courser just to use up your mana. Your case was that when you hit 6 mana, you’ll just cast Sip – like that’s gonna end the game on the spot
@Chris O.
That’s embarassing. Good thing I chose to be anonymous.
In match 3 game 3 when you were playing around Stymied hopes (which I feel is good, would have been embarrassing to walk into it with keep sake or staunch hearted) both turns 4 and 5 you only attacked with the scorpion and played your spells 2nd main, although you get 2 free damage by just playing both 1st main phase leaving satyr up for stymied hopes. Then if he has it you can pay, if not the spell resolves and you can attack with both. Small mistake, but you did it in consecutive turns without even stopping to say “I’m not playing these first main because….” Of course it’s better in almost all cases to play 2nd main, but if you’re just going there automatically without consideration repeatedly it may be a leak in your game.
There is no way in hell you can consider nylea’s disciple over read the bones after your first two picks an passing the uncommon heroic dude.
Nyleas disicple is underwhelming and easily gets outclassed at 4 mana
