Round 3 game 2: You should have Strip Mined his 1st land.
This has the basic effect of blanking both his and yours 1st turn, but it exposes you to not drawing your 3rd and 4th lands. But you still have 3 tries to hit land number 1 and 4 to hit the second one too. Meanwhile, the Strip Mine loses a lot of value as soon as your opponent drops anything to the board and even if you don’t draw 2 lands in 4 draws, you might draw into some more cheap action that helps you survive his early game.
On the other side of the board he might be low on lands and get mana screwed if you strip him and is at worst set back a full turn from getting stripped.
In my opinion the benefits of just Stripping turn 1 outweight the disadvantages by quite a bit.
Undermine, just not a card in your mind?
Counterspell plus bump in the night.
@Dave, no, it’s not really a card.
The decks that want counterspells are not the ones that want Bump in the Night
When you’re trying to counter their next big threat and regain some semblance of board control, nugging them for 3 isn’t that inspiring.
And likewise when you want to get in those last 3 points of damage, do you really want to have to wait until they put a spell on the stack to be able to do it?
Also, @Marshall – the guy Match 1 probably just confused it with Parallax Tide, which was the blue version and identical in every way except it hits lands not creatures
holy crap your deck was nuts round three! and also Grave Titan: still that good.
I actually like Gloom Surgeon against Big Green in round two, as with Ulamog and several discard outlets of your own should you draw Ulamog, he blocks forever (and potentially sets up the dream of Makeshifting Ulamog with the shuffle effect on the stack).
@Godot, I would imagine then that the real reason you like Gloom Surgeon is that you don’t actually know what it does
Surgeon exiles, he doesn’t mill.
‘Next turn free Ulamog, yeah that sounds perfectly reasonable to me’ made me laugh.
But Gloom Surgeon + Shelldock Isle does seem like a little bit of a combo…
Haha “I need a sandwich”
Squeek, you can only cast the card exiled by shelldock isle with shelldock isle, not any exiled card, that would be insane.
BillTheCat: I think Squeek meant that Gloom Surgeon gets your library down to 20 cards pretty fast.
R2G2, why not Makeshift Mannequin his Deranged Hermit during combat to make four squirrels to block and kill all of his? Did you not hear the yelling through time and space at the monitor?
Makeshift says “your graveyard”. So it wont work:(
Ahh, so it’s not Rise From the Grave at instant, got it.
Don’t play cube. Every time you are rewarding the greed people behind the terrible prize structure.
If you are going to use me as an impostor and try to make people angry, at least try to spell correctly and use grammar properly.
Although I do agree with your sentiment… mtgo cube is a rip off.
I also need a sandwich.
