I was under the impression that creatures died if they had regeneration shields, non-lethal damage and then had their toughness reduced. Am I insane? (RE: Not blocking Wolfir Avenger R1G1)
Yes, they definitely don’t die. If it gets -1/-1, now instead of, let’s say, a 2/2 with 1 damage on it and a regen. shield, it’s a 1/1 with 1 damage on it and a regen. shield, so state-based effects check and it has lethal damage, not <0 toughness. So it regens.
@ChrisKool
Yes (you’re insane). Regeneration replaces being destroyed by damage. If a 3/3 with 2 damage on it gets -2/-2, it becomes a 1/1 with 2 damage on it and is destroyed by lethal damage (which is replaced by regeneration). To get around regeneration, an effect needs to reduce the creature’s toughness to 0 or less (in which case it’s put into the graveyard as a state based effect).
Regeneration: “The next time
[permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage marked on it and tap it. If it’s
an attacking or blocking creature, remove it from combat”
Round 2 you had 2 creatures on board (one of them was latch), a creature in hand and barter, and your enchant in play. Opponent has 2 or 3 creatures. So instead of playing your creature, bartering and sacking your human and zombie you draw a land, when you would have won by swinging with your 5/2 unblock able.
I think you conceded M2G1 while not all that dead? Because your marrow bats is dead, the ghoul is homicidally secluded again, so when he attacks you can block and gain some life. His attack also bounces his other guy, so I think you’re still in it at this point?
Or am I missing something?
R2G1 – Sacing the apprentice to draw a card was bad play as Jon said. You would have had Latchseeker at lethal damage. Must have been a late night sealed.
Re: Chris and Regen.
Maybe this is/was an MTGO bug (the rules do say the creature should survive) . But I agree with Chris: I have 100% seen a Thrun with 2 damage on it die from a Black Sun’s Zenith X=2 even when regeneration is applied in response to the Zenith.
Maybe this was fixed at some point, but I’ve seen it happen – frequently enough that my first thought was to block/kill the Avenger as well.
@StealthBadger – I was thinking the same exact thing, so if you’re missing something then I missed the same thing.
Also, IMO playing the Homicidal Seclusion out with two creatures in play was a bad play. You were ahead in the race and could continue beating down with the Mist Raven while chump blocking with the Butcher Ghoul. After the ghoul is down, you can then use the Homicidal Seclusion on your turn as a surprise for a sudden 5 point lifelink attack, most likely putting your opponent at 5 life at that point.
@ Stealth Badger. Nope, you are right R2 G1 was botched. Lifelink is simultaneous these days not a trigger like it used to be so he just conceded for no reason. Assuming his opponent attacks – which isn’t even guaranteed then he is still at 5 life vs. an inquisitor and a random card, and then next card off the top is grisselbrand which would be a 10/8 guy with redundant lifelink… probably good enough.
The Wolfir Avenger shouldn’t die from the -2/-2 and lethal damage with regeneration unless MTGO is bugging out and not doing it right. I agree that you did play Homicidal Seclusion early sometimes when you could use it to be a finisher without having to play around it and your opponent knowing about it.
Regarding the format: Sealed is sealed – it will be bomb driven most of the time – but as far as sealed formats go I’m enjoying this one a lot. Some games just get bombed out, but those that don’t tend to have a lot of play to them.
I’ve only drafted a couple times, but I agree the the format seems great… of course I almost always feel that way about new formats, we’ll see how long it stays fresh.
that was just aweful. Seriously dude, get better at this game. You punted match 2 game 1 like 3 times in a row. Painful to watch.
Also, please be more decisive in your line of play. Its wicked frustrating watching you analyze different lines of play for 2 min, then somehow always decide the worst line of play. It would be funny if it were not so painful to watch.
Practice more.
Don’t you play constructed any more? Everyone and their grandmother post sealed and draft videos. It would be nice to see more Standard, Modern or Legacy videos. (not block)
