Haha! Your commentary is both super cynical and funny as hell. You need to lighten up a bit.
Dude try to be a bit less cynical, less like the fattest most neckbearded guy at your FLGS. No need to be a low-rent Lewis Black nonstop. I know it’s your shtick but it gets old fast and if it doesn’t sound like you’re enjoying playing we won’t enjoy watching it. Also don’t complain about people taking too much time when you take literal 10 minute turns. You’re playing a solitaire masturbation deck which can pull off some cool poopy, but it’s boring for other players. You can make a strong deck without sucking the fun out of the game for everyone. AND your mincing way of eating your salad sounds absolutely refreshing.
See reading that is what it’s like for us watching your videos. Loosen up a bit and maybe chuckle once in awhile. And maybe make a slightly less comboish deck, like synergistic but still with fun interactions. That said, keep up the videos. I enjoy them and, being new to Commander, they are fun to watch! Especially your make fun of magic art ones. Don’t mean to come off as a meanie-poo, since I like your content, but…be a bit more chill!

you never left
is Jin Gitaxias too much of a pipe dream? complete your colours of praetors…
much love to SteveDildy. looks like a superhero with his pauper EDH deck.
DING! Round 1:
Uno.) Cynical isn’t my “schtick.” This is not an “online persona.” I am playing and talking, with no rehearsal. If you had the dubious pleasure of knowing me beyond these hallowed, holographic halls, you would know as much, but ya don’t so…
My advice to you, a person who is providing fictitious personal info, behind your comfy little guise of anonymity whilst barking from the shadows your lowbrow banter, would be, since you seem to enjoy virtually nothing about the video, don’t watch ‘em. So, please, muster your almighty “we” and troll elsewhere. Either way. If you would like to contribute actual criticism, take the three seconds to make an account and make yourself known. Until then I will abide with the clamor in the last video I did, which you apparently watched, and do what I do and have always done.
Two.) If you consider the deck I played to be a non-interactive “Combo” deck – the misuse of this word is one of the poorest wielded weapons by “Casual” players – you know little about the format, small one. Again, I am making videos, not tailoring them to the local rabble, as it were. I do not indulge semantics, nor do I bother with trying to please the unrelenting and ever-situational laws of EDH conduct. So, much like my vids, maybe find another format?
So take a tiny hand and clap twice for another failed attempt to engage me, “It’s raining men.” How clever; how bold. So much to say and in such wise way. This is all you will get for the two hours spent watching my vid, a party favor just for you, tuxedo.
PLAY ON!
I thought about it Doug, but I like the get to work right away factor of most of the men in the deck. Too many variables to make sure he works beyond just restocking my hand. But maybe you are right!
Lol. Instead of attacking the messenger why not listen to the overly acidic criticism in my first post? Yeah I’m hiding as anon because it doesn’t matter who I am. I’m your viewer. I’m not saying your content sucks; if I’m watching it I obviously like it. I’m saying just lighten up a tiny bit. Do you enjoy playing magic? Unless you’re actually the jaded hate the world narcissist you come off as in the videos, I would assume you do. Let that come through to your audience. And I doubt you’re really that grognardy, considering your mostly polite ingame chat. Plus while I am new to the format, even you could put yourself in the place of your opponents while you take consecutive 10 minute turns. Would you enjoy that? Look at those lands twiddle. When anyone paused for 30+ seconds you were like “It’s on you bro.” Why would you expect someone to enjoy a game with you when it takes 30 minutes to go around the table twice as you caress your graveyard.
Did I mention you eat salad in quite the way a fine gentleman would? This part of my comment is totally unnecessary but I gotta say it just to make sure I don’t get the vapors, give you a chance to skip over what I said previously, and write me off…but seriously, watch the peasants labor in the streets with your salad eating in the background. It’s one of the finer things in life.
[Thanks for making me edit this one, too. While I was doing that, I missed watching ChrisKool vs. Aaron Forsythe in the CCC because all the viewing slots filled up. -- PlanetWalls]
Lol, I do like the salad edit by the mod.
[Okay, look: If you want to make me keep editing your stuff, fine for now (until I figure out how to ban your IP or something). But please, please stop linking to (what might actually be) adult sites in your posts. -- PlanetWalls; P.S. thanks for the complimentary post]
I didn’t link to anything! But I’ll settle down and try to act my age instead of being a ruckus-maker; sorry bout that. Occasionally the sound of a fine gentlemen enjoying a salad just gets me all het up. Apologies to Travis as well, I do appreciate your content and would love to see it as much and as frequently as possible (not sarcastic). I should take my own advice and be less antagonistic in the future. Let’s toast over a crisp wedge of iceberg and be friends
As for the casual argument in commander-
Commander is desigend to be a fun format. A very overpowered format, with the intent being to have fun. Most strategys fit into that except……
Mass land destruction- stops everyone from playing the game, obviously not fun
Infinite combo- Extremely boring for everyone, with an exception. If the combo is extremely hard to pull together (4 card plus), or accidental. Anyone can make a 2 or 3 card instant win combo deck that goes off on t4 or 5, boring.
Lockdown- once again, if nobody can play the game, then its not fun.
Your deck seems perfect for commander. Overpowered, but not overpowering.
A couple points-your land count is low, 34 mana producing lands is low.
Bloodghast is bad in commander, wonder would be better.
More graveyard removal, alot of decks play creatures just as scary or scarier than yours. Mayael is a good example.
Cool deck though.
Please don’t eat during a video. Seems like this should be common sense.
And don’t feed the troll with florid, defensive replies. They feed on that stuff like you and ten million of your salads.
I have never understood the concept of playing a highlander format with infi tutors…congrats, you played your same 4 cards again.
You just fapped for an hour, enjoy.
forget all the haters man…i’m glad you’re finally back making vids.. been waiting months for these to come back checking the site occasionally.
i don’t understand why you peasants cannot appreciate the nutritional value of a delicious fruit salad and coffee at 7 p.m, BUT it is not my responsibility to convey health facts and lifestyle choices. My salad is my muse, be damned viewers. This chewing you hear is the combustion of thoughts glorious.
Take the orthopedic shoe out of your digestive crevice and get real, son. I’m making mad zombie babies in your face.
More videos to come.Flex.
Wait, so does that mean that we’ll get to hear more salad-eating, or less? I barely even noticed your salad, and I’m the sort of person who nearly vomits when I Skype with ChrisKool and hear him eating a pickle from my end. (No double endtendre intended.)
I am a friend. I am a role model. Eat well. Play better. “Fun” = winning! I heart Chris Kool. Buy a website and become your own me!
I was encouraging nutrition. Fat people will never understand this from basement realms; I’m the new Martha Plimpton.
Bloodghast is sactastic in a way Wonder can only dream of! Wrong!
Perhaps it was Travis’s sabbatical from the Academy — I don’t recall anyone taking such offense before — but vitriol in the form of profanity and name-calling will not be tolerated in this comments section. If you find your comments mysteriously edited in such a way as to flaccify your language, it was probably me. Note that I am comfortable with both occasional acerbic criticism and mild colorful language in the comments section as well as in the contributed content itself, but I won’t let the Academy turn into 4chan if I can help it.
Interesting video but seriously can you eat less while mic’d up? Use a mute button to take a bite or something cause that’s super annoying. Anyways interesting deck. Kind of a glass cannon though.
Bravo sir. I laughed and I learned something. One can’t expect much more from an MTGO video. Good to have you back.
Nice to see more videos, your decks are always very streamlined.
Love the Sangromancer tech! Also playing with Anger/Urabrask is too much fun, something about giving your creatures haste seems so dirty.
Some thoughts that popped into my head:
I’d recommend Necromancy over Reanimate, the lack of life loss and instant speed potential has always been worth the vulnerability to enchantment removal and extra 2 mana for me. Imagine getting a surprise instant speed Conquering Manticore, Massacre Wurm, Shriekmaw, Venser, Gilded Drake, etc.
Also, Consecrated Sphinx > Mulldrifter. Although maybe since you’re going for the less evil, more thematic deck Mulldrifter is the call.
Phyrexian Metamorph is incredible and worth a slot, it does so much for so little.
Tainted Pact seems like another good tutor, just sub out 2 islands for a snow covered island and some other land. Maybe you don’t want to risk exiling living death though.
Miren the Moaning Well over Diamond Valley? It costs 3 but taps for mana.
Anyways, fun vids, keep them coming!
” I won’t let the Academy turn into 4chan if I can help it.”
Are you Moot? Your picture kind of looks like Moot.
Woah! As you might imagine I’m a little wet right now.
Travis is back big time!
So first of all let me congratulate you on your personal live, good stuff.
But you’re still ain’t a daddy, right?
Second of all I gotta say, that I really like the new deck.
I imagined Great Whale being absurd but why no good ol’ Palinchrone?
Does the same job but also flies and has maybe some more hidden combo applications.
Other than that, I think the deck should run smoothly.
I also like the idea of “Real men don’t need removal cuz they just power out huge ass threats.”
Lastly I can confirm you, that you did not speak any German words at all.
Try saying “Ausrasten!” next time you go of with Living Death if you want to make me a happy eXXa.
great videos!! i really missed these glad your back!
Finally! My virtua-pals have arrived!
Now, answers!
1.) I believe I mention how flimsy Animate Dead is and, that despite the life loss, Reanimate is simply superior. It’s another Mystical target and, more importantly, it’s extremely cost-efficient. The life loss, especially when you just ‘splode giant men allover the red zone, doesn’t matter so much. So Necromancy just isn’t as good, trick factor or not. Too many opps, too many ways to deal with it.
2.) Consecrated is awesome, but not right. The idea is “I want my effects now because these guys may not live to see tomorrow.” And while one draw step does what ol’ Drifter does, I just don’t like where he is in the curve, that I can’t play him like a Divination and bring him back (4 cards?!) and that he isn’t a halibut with angel wings smiling in a wave pool.
3.) I tried to fit Metamorph, but there’s nothing I wanna remove. Also, when creatures enter en masse via Death, he becomes nothing most of the time. I have this problem with Sakashima and with Body Double. And they are simply superior.
4.) No one on Earth is a bigger Tainted Pact fan than me, but I don’t think it’s right in this deck. With the amount of draw economy and battery of tutors, it’s overkill and subpar.
5.) As ridic as this sounds, the four mana it costs to use Miren is far worse than having no mana and tapping Diamond Valley. I have tried it and it might as well just be a colorless nothing grove.
6.) Oh eXXa, my love, my light, as always I mention why I don’t play Pallinchron in the video – he’s smaller in stature and I will never hardcast him, so he’s just a tinier dude with an ability I will never use beyond the flying. Great Whale is seriously da juice.
7.) Bloodghast is a wimp, but, like Squee part of the mitigation engine in the deck. They are there to abuse, not to dole abuse, and Wonder simply is not the same.
When will you people realize, I have thought of and tried most of these things. Nothing escapes thy all-encompassing eye! I build my decks with, usually, a 3 card or less wiggle room, if at all possible, but they are totally remixable for your mutilating pleasure.
I appreciate the feedback, people! You will see at least two more of these vids in the coming weeks. Hang tight! Keep it sticky! Troll away!
Oh, and my idea to eat through my first real video in almost a year obviously has went over most people’s heads, so I will stick to jokes about the Critters movies and insert slide whistle sounds from now on. Sigh.
See Travis, that’s why you mention the reasons for playing certain cards instead of others on the fly, while playing
Cuz I’m always to excited to sit through the whole deck tech and also I get the idea after looking at the deck list for like 1 minute.
Just for the record: I wasn’t suggesting a swap but to include both, to be comborific more often.
But enough of that.
So tell me now: are you a daddy and will you say the German word I suggested just once?
I have yet to sire a podling and soil this fine planet, no. Currently, the time I am using to make videos is coming out of my procreation bank. So be grateful!
I will try and remember to speak the tongue of the master race, me swears it! Until then, be proud that in my new pic I am wearing ’70s German vintage eye wear that cost roughly the same as a small vehicle.
OMG so much love for this comeback. Eat all the salad you can find and make the little ponys cry on MTGO.
Thanks for posting these vids Travis
Why does everyone have Crate and Barrel swastikas for their icons?
This video was awesome and f’in hilarious.
Never played/watched a single game of Commander in my life (I vaguely know the rules), but this was, well, fucking hilarious, sir.
Keep it up xD
Having one out (venser) to GY hate like leyline/sun and moon seems dicey.
Regarding treating this format competitively, do you think your deck has a chance against well tuned decks? Virtually any well constructed combo deck (hermit druid, sharuum, etc.) seems to go off faster, and your disruption suite is rather marginal. Why not avoid the pick up game scene and show us some competitive opponents!
inneutral,
I believe I prefaced, during the decktech, that this deck was a nice compromise, of sorts, for competitive players who want to get in a game that is not entirely uninteractive and that doesn’t outrage fellow players. I have decks, brutal, brutal decks, but what’s the point in having three other people sit through the motions while I bowflex in front of the magic mirror? It doesn’t make for a good video; it doesn’t encourage people to play me or watch my content.
In terms of card selections, I explained why I was playing the cards I had elected and the concessions one makes when playing a strategy like this. I have encountered and defeated many decks with Leyline of the Void and Relic of Progenitus. As I also mentioned in the decktech, if someone comes with GY hate hardcasting your guys isn’t an unrealistic Plan B. Remember, every deck strategy has a hole in it somewhere; and the more moving parts you have, the more compact your strategy is, means that often those inherit weaknesses can be your certain doom. In many cases, other players will get rid of problematic cards – esp. since bounce is my only real option in these colors.
Furthermore, setting out to capture only “competitive content” is a two-fold dilemma.
1.) many player’s definition of what is and isn’t competitive is as varied as what falls under the umbrella of “fun.” Sure, as a competitive player I can scoff at someone else’s cards, deck, play style, but maybe to them, in their own little global bubble, they’re the dominator, and the cards and decks they play have good track records.
As it stands I have to tape hours of games in order to provide you a single game, marginal or not. People rage quit, they freak out and lecture, and, yes, sometimes I cannot resist biting back. This format is rife with so many issues in terms of trying to share content, the odds are already stacked against me. Trust me, I have put the header ‘ serious decks only – no quitting’ many a time – all this does is attract even worse players.
And 2.) read the above comments: you’re too sarcastic vs. love your sarcasm. Your deck is noninteractive and too competitive vs please make competitive vids. It’s all subjective, and, in the end, I cannot please everyone. I can tell you that I will never create a video on a well-known, hyper competitive combo deck for Commander; what would be the point? “Turn two – hermit druid, tap, mill, spend 5 mins assembling win, end of video.” If I need sexy alone time, I won’t have Camtasia on and I won’t be playing MtGO, rest assured.
So really the whole issue boils down to toeing the line – trying to give something streamlined but not so that it makes for one-sided games and videos. I would, however, ask that before taking a pointy stick to me and my ideas pay closer attention to the decktech as I am usually quite thorough and cover a lot why and how before jumping into a game. Sure, I don’t always get out in front of every question, but I do for a lot of them.
Thanks though for watching – more vids to come! Next vid has two games!
This would be much more enjoyable if you just showed the replay. Kudos to anyone who actually watched this without fast forwarding.
